Three words for 2016.

2016 | Kourtney Thomas Fitness

So…2016 was weird.

I think we can all agree on that. A lot of people who made an impact on our lives and our culture passed away. The presidential campaign and election here in the US were…unsettling, to say the very least. Much of what went on surrounding that left me feeling raw, exposed, lost, and upset. Not to mention, confused and slightly angry, and I know I’m not alone. In the end, that stuff galvanized me to make changes and stand up for everything I believe in, no matter what, in the future. To do more than just say.

But flowing along with all of those current events, some really incredible stuff was happening for me, and 2016 was actually one of my best years ever.

In fact, I spent about three hours this week reflecting on my year and working on intentions and goals for 2017. I ended up with seven pages of goals and concepts, ideas and how to make them happen, priorities and values and all kinds of things that I’m going to manifest in the new year.

And I am beyond pumped about it. This was an incredibly exciting and fun exercise for me, because it felt like a really cool, natural extension of how amazing 2016 was for me, despite how weird it was.

I mean, the year started off pretty well, but around the Spring, it took a turn into hyperdrive and basically exploded into awesomeness. And it all stemmed from taking a chance and attending an event that really scared me, the Radiance Retreat. I’ve talked about it before, and shared a lot about it on social media, but aside from all the wonderful things that happened that weekend, one big thing really shaped my year.

We were asked on the very first day to come up with three words to describe what we wanted to focus on. (Or something like that…it might have been for the rest of the year, or for ourselves overall, I can’t quite remember, and didn’t write it in my notes!) I had a hard time coming up with just three on the spot, but these were mine:

Connection, community, and elevation. I also, importantly, wrote down confidence, and to embrace and grow. And it’s the very first time I wrote down, “Big arms to hold my big life.”

LIGHTBULB, YOU GUYS.

To say that this little exercise had an impact on absolutely everything that I did for the rest of the year would be an understatement. Everything I have done has carried the spirit of connection, community, and elevation. Everything I have said and done has definitely reflected my big arms, big life philosophy. And all of that? It has changed me personally and professionally on a whole new level.

So as I sat reflecting on this year, and setting intentions for next year, I couldn’t help but smile. There were hard times and difficult decisions. But there were amazing times and easy choices. And all of that stuff combined for a life I wouldn’t trade for absolutely anything. And you know what? It only gets better from here. How so? Well, in my three words for 2017, of course.

Cultivate, build, bigness.

There’s so much world out there. 2016 was a challenge, but it elevated my whole life, and opened my eyes to so many possibilities. All the things I can create for myself. All the ways I can feel. It’s rather crazy that three little words made as big of a difference as they did, even among some difficult times.

Three words.

Just three words, with even the slightest bit of intention behind them can rock your world. If you’re skeptical, try it. Seriously. It’s not actually that woo-woo at all. All it takes is a few minutes of quiet time and a piece of paper.

Reflect on your past year. What do you want more of? What do you want less of? Think about what you have going on, your life, what you want for yourself. Do some visualizing. Write it down. I can nearly guarantee that you’ll be able to tease out your three words pretty easily. And if you continue to place your intentions around your words for the year? I bet you’ll start a fire even bigger and brighter than you ever imagined.

So, what are your three words for 2017? Comment below and share them with me, if you’d like. I can’t wait to see how the year is going to shape up for you. No matter what, I know it’s going to be big.
